Geoff McGhee specializes in interactive data visualization and multimedia storytelling. He works with such clients as Schema Design, The Committee to Protect Journalists, the Oxford University Press, and others.
At Stanford University, he is Associate Editor of the Bill Lane Center for the American West’s original journalism blog, ‘...& the West.’ At the University of Colorado, he is the data and infographics consultant for The Water Desk, a grant-funded project at the University’s Center for Environmental Journalism.
Previously, Geoff spent nine years at Stanford University working at the nexus of academic research and public engagement, developing websites, digital publications and interactive dashboards exploring western environmental, governance and economic issues, as well as historical and cultural topics. He also served as a lecturer in multimedia environmental journalism.
An experienced journalist, Geoff is a veteran of the multimedia and infographics staffs at The New York Times, Le Monde and ABCNews.com, and was the lead writer on National Geographic’s “Data Points” column on information visualization in 2015-16.
In 2009-10, Geoff spent a Knight Fellowship year at Stanford researching data analysis and visualization, which resulted in the widely-cited video documentary “Journalism in the Age of Data.”
Geoff received his master's degree in journalism from Columbia University.
